Feyenoord come from behind to beat Sparta Rotterdam

Feyenoord came from behind to beat city rivals Sparta Rotterdam 3-1 in the Dutch Eredivisie on Sunday (29th April).

Feyenoord won the Rotterdam derby against Sparta, but they had to do it the hard way after conceding the opening goal.

Last season's champions were expected to ease past Sparta, who began the day second from bottom in the table.

But that appeared to count for little as the smaller Rotterdam club took the lead in brilliant fashion - Nigerian striker Fred Friday collecting a pass from Thomas Verhaar before bending a sumptuous shot past Feyenoord goalkeeper Justin Bijlow in the 34th minute.

The advantage lasted until stoppage-time at the end of the first half.

Robin van Persie drifted a dangerous cross into the far post where Steven Berghuis was waiting to direct his header into the roof of the net.

Sparta were forced onto the back foot in the second half and the Feyenoord pressuyre eventually saw the visiting defence crack - Frederik Holst inadvertantly prodding the ball past keeper Jannikl Huth and into the corner of his own net.

Berghuis made sure of the points with seven minutes left, tapping in a pass from Karim El Ahmadi.

Feyenoord remain fourth, five points behind AZ Alkmaar, with Sparta four points ahead of bottom side FC Twente.
