Feyenoord defeated struggling FC Groningen

Jens Toornstra's 14 goals were a big reason why Feyenoord won the Eredivisie three seasons ago, and he has rediscovered that form - a brilliant control and volley for 1-0 lead over visitors Groningen.

The 29-year-old's second goal in as many games as Feyenoord try to close the 11-point gap behind second placed Ajax.

All Groningen's openings were coming from Moroccan playmaker Mimoun Mahi - this time he fed Ritsu Doan and the Japanese midfielder was unlucky not to tie things up.

The second half was all about Groningen's keeper Sergio Padt - first he got a good glove to this effort from Steven Berghuis.

But this was even better - a long range stunner from Tonny Vilhena, and he got the faintest of touches to keep it out.

Feyenoord have not been as clinical as they would like in front of goal this season - Berghuis the latest culprit.

Still smarting from last month's 3-0 defeat at Ajax, they need to improve to threaten the runaway leaders PSV and Ajax.
