Late heartbreak for Feyenoord as Willem II score late in 1-1 draw

Feyenoord were left frustrated on Sunday when they were held to a 1-1 in Tilburg by a determined Willem II side in a match which sparked to life in the second half.

There were a few openings in the first period with Feyenoord goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer keeping his side level with a smart save to keep out a diving header from Willem II's Spanish striker Fran Sol.

Chances came at an increased rate in the second half and Feyenoord almost took the lead just after the break with a cross-cum-shot from Steven Berghuis which almost crept in at the far post.

But the opening goal did come - with the help of VAR. Willem II goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther produced a brilliant instinctive save to keep out a header from Eric Botteghin and that looked to be that.

But referee Kevin Blom was alerted by VAR to some holding by Willem II's Thomas Meisner on Feyenoord defender Jan-Arie van der Heijden. After reviewing the video footage, Blom pointed to the spot and Berghuis did the rest to give Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side the lead with less than 20 minutes to play.

But they failed to hold on to their lead as Willem II equalised with five minute left - Sol applying a delicate finish to a low cross from Donis Avdjiaj.

Feyenoord' dropped points meant they are now seven points behind leaders PSV who have a 100 per cent record from their eight matches. Willem II moved up to 11th in the table.
