PSV came from behind to beat bottom side Groningen

PSV won a fiery encounter at FC Groningen with a late goal on Saturday (27th October) to send them eight clear at the top of the Eredivisie.

Rock bottom, and facing the league leaders, few expected much from FC Groningen as they hosted PSV in the Eredivisie. But much of the action in the early part of the first half was in the stands.

The home fans turning the hardcore section behind the goal into a sea of flares – all too much for the referee. He called a halt to proceedings, with smoke causing chaos.

It seemed to spark FC Groningen into life when play got underway. Julian Chabot hauled down in the box by Luuk de Jong three minutes before the break – penalty. Samir Memisevic made no mistake from the spot, and FC Groningen had an unlikely lead.

Not one that lasted long however as PSV drew level before the break. A neat passing move saw the ball worked wide for Denzel Dumfries – and he found the arriving Donyell Malen: 1-1.

Mark Van Bommel's side improved in the second half and De Jong really should have given them the lead - but Sergio Padt was simply inspired. The Groningen 'keeper with a remarkable save to keep things level.

With time running out it looked as the hosts would hold out for a remarkable point – but Dumfries had other ideas. A wonderful run…and a cool finish put PSV ahead with just four minutes remaining. That's how it would finish.

Heartbreak for FC Groningen but delight for PSV, who move eight points clear of Ajax at the top of the table.
